Tip For Keeping Track Of Databases You’ve Submitted To

August 9th, 2007 · No Comments

One thing I am finding while I am submitting my blog to directories is that it is incredibly hard to keep track of which ones I have already submitted to.  I’ve been wasting much time trying to remember whether or not I’ve already submitted to them.  Also, some directories require you to register and create a login and password.  I’m planning on submitting to many directories, so keeping track of all these passwords and usernames would be mind numbing using my current method (writing it on a sticky note and then eventually loosing it to the mass I have stuck together on my desk).

While I do love sticky notes, I think it is time to develop a new method.  So while brainstorming I realized that Microsoft Excel would work as a great way to keep track of the directories I submit to and login info.

Make It Easy With Excel

I created an Excel document that keeps track of the names of the directories I submitted to, their URL, my username (if required), password (if required), and email address I registered under.

This way when I come upon a directory that I’m not sure if I have submitted to already, I can open up my Excel document, click on Edit –> Find and then type in the directory name and it will find whether or not that directory is in my list.

Find feature in Excel

Forgot Your Password or Username?

You can use the find feature in Excel to find out what your password and username are for a directory you have submitted to as well.

Have more than one site?

If you have multiple web sites or blogs you can dedicate a separate sheet for each one.

Seperate sheets in Excel

Overall I have found that Microsoft Excel does a great job of managing and keeping track of the directories I have submitted to.  Microsoft Word would work as well, as it has a Find feature in it, but I don’t think it would work as well as Excel.
