I was searching the Internet the other day for a backlink checker and found this one.  It will show you how many backlinks you have in Google, Yahoo, MSN, Altavista, and Alltheweb.

This one gave me part of the information I wanted, but I also wanted to find out where my backlinks were coming from.  I wanted to see the exact sites that had my link on them.  So I found this backlink checker which will show all the pages that have a link to your web site on them.  As an added bonus it also shows the pagerank of each site that links to you.

Why are backlinks important?  Most search engines consider that popular sites will have more backlinks.  So the more backlinks you have, the more popular search engines will think your site is, which means higher rankings in the search engines.
